At a glance
Choose Standard unless you already want the Ultimate Edition Upgrade's named vehicles, weapons, styles, and story destinations. The checked US prices are $79.99 and $99.99, and Xbox lists the separate upgrade at $20, so waiting does not currently show a price penalty. Ultimate is digital-only; the physical Standard box contains a download code and no disc. Preorder bonuses are separate from edition content.
The $20 upgrade buys a long list of digital story extras—but Standard is still the smarter default for most players.

Standard Edition includes Grand Theft Auto VI. It is listed digitally and is the only edition Rockstar currently lists as a physical product.
It is the lower checked US store price and keeps the Ultimate upgrade content outside the initial purchase.
Ultimate Edition is a digital purchase that includes the game and the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.
The official listing names vehicles, revolvers, weapon variants, Vice City styles, safehouse vehicles, modification shops, stores, a tattoo parlor, a salon, a compound, and a classic-car collection across Jason and Lucia's story. These are digital story extras—not early access and not the Vintage Vice City preorder pack.

Rockstar Support says Standard Edition owners can purchase the separate digital Ultimate Edition Upgrade through PlayStation or Xbox storefronts after redeeming their game code. The checked US Xbox listing currently prices it at $20.00.
That listing does not guarantee identical availability, timing, or terms in every region, so check the storefront tied to your platform account before relying on the upgrade path.
The current physical option is Standard Edition only. It contains a digital download code and does not include a game disc.
Rockstar Support does not currently list a physical Ultimate Edition. A physical Standard buyer can consider the separate digital upgrade after redeeming the game code, subject to the applicable storefront terms.
Edition content and preorder offers are separate buying questions. Ultimate's upgrade content belongs to the edition comparison, while Rockstar separately lists the Vintage Vice City Pack for eligible purchases and one month of GTA+ for eligible digital preorders.
The GTA+ month auto-renews unless canceled and uses platform-specific redemption deadlines. Check the exact account, purchase-date, and regional terms instead of assuming every retailer uses the same offer rules.
Check the current preorder offers separately; the Vintage Vice City Pack and GTA+ month are not the same thing as Ultimate Edition content.
If a box matters to you, read the no-disc physical edition guide before assuming that Standard includes install media or normal resale value.
For the date, platform, preload, and price overview, return to the GTA 6 release hub.
If a code, import, or account region is involved, use the region and code redemption guide before buying Standard or the later digital upgrade.
Recommendation
Pay the extra $20 only if the named digital story extras already appeal to you. Standard delivers the full base game and preserves a listed upgrade path, so uncertainty is a reason to start lower, not a reason to panic-buy Ultimate.
